State senators would improve public confidence in the integrity of Nebraska’s state government by enacting a two-year waiting period before former elected officials can become lobbyists.
The practice of elected officials turning around immediately after leaving office to work for special interests is sometimes referred to as revolving-door syndrome.
For former senators, lobbying could be delayed
A state Republican and Democrat came together Wednesday to announce their support for a proposal establishing a waiting period between when elected officials leave office and when they can become paid or unpaid lobbyists.
Republican Gov. Dave Heineman and Lincoln Sen. Bill Avery, a Democrat, said they believe a two-year waiting period would prevent perceptions that government is not working in the best interest of the public.
Nebraska lawmakers may need to wait two years to become lobbyists
Nebraska lawmakers would have to wait two years to lobby their former colleagues under a legislative proposal announced today by Gov. Dave Heineman and State Sen. Bill Avery of Lincoln.
Avery plans to introduce the proposal during the upcoming legislative session, which starts Jan. 9.
